چکیده
ABSTRACT Observations of reionization-era analogues at z ? 3 are a powerful tool for constraining reionization. Rest-ultraviolet observations particularly useful, in which both direct and indirect tracers ionizing-photon production escape can be observed. We analyse sample 124 galaxies from the Keck Lyman Continuum Spectroscopic Survey, with sensitive spectroscopic measurements continuum region. present method removing foreground contamination our using high-resolution, multiband Hubble Space Telescope imaging. re-measure global properties cleaned 13 individually detected sources 107 undetected sources, including sample-averaged absolute fraction fesc, abs = 0.06 ± 0.01 ratio ionizing to non-ionizing ultraviolet flux density ?f900/f1500?out 0.040 0.006, corrected attenuation intergalactic circumgalactic media. The Lyman continuum radiation escaping from galaxies
The Hα luminosity density of galaxies is used to calculate the local diffuse radiation field at the Lyman limit as resulting from star formation in the universe. The fraction of Lyman continuum radiation leaking out from galaxies through their neutral hydrogen is the most uncertain parameter of the calculation. A comparison of the diffuse radiation predicted from galaxies with that measured fro...
متن کاملUpper limit on Lyman continuum flux escaping from galaxies at z ∼ 3 using VLT narrow - band photometry ⋆
We have performed narrow-band imaging observations with the Very Large Telescope, aimed at detecting the Lyman continuum (LC) flux escaping from galaxies at z ∼ 3. We do not find any significant LC flux from our sample of two galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field South, at z = 3.170 and 3.275. The corresponding lower limits on the F1400/F900 flux density (per Hz) ratio are 15.6 and 10.2 (3-σ confid...
متن کاملNarrowband Lyman - Continuum Imaging of Galaxies at Z ∼ 2 . 85
We present results from a survey for z ∼ 2.85 Lyman-Continuum (LyC) emission in the HS1549+1933 field and place constraints on the amount of ionizing radiation escaping from starforming galaxies. Using a custom narrowband filter (NB3420) tuned to wavelengths just below the Lyman limit at z ≥ 2.82, we probe the LyC spectral region of 49 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) and 91 Lyα-emitters (LAEs) spec...
متن کاملEssential observations of the Lyman continuum
Concurrent observations of Lyman continuum (LyC) and Lyman α (Lyα) emission escaping from star-forming systems at low redshift are essential to understanding the physics of reionization at high redshift (z & 6). Some have suggested reionization is dominated by numerous small galaxies with LyC escape fractions fe ∼ 10%, while others suggest mini-quasars with higher fe might also play a role. At ...
متن کاملLyman “bump” galaxies - I. Spectral energy distribution of galaxies with an escape of nebular Lyman continuum
It is essential to know galactic emissivity and spectrum of Lyman continuum (LyC) in order to understand the cosmic reionization. Here we consider an escape of nebular LyC from galaxies and examine the consequent spectral energy distribution. It is usually assumed that hydrogen nebular LyC mostly produced by bound-free transitions is consumed within photo-ionized nebulae (so-called “on-the-spot...
